The Outsiders (1983)

A town split between the wealthy South Zone gang called ‘The Socials’ and the poor North Zone gang called ‘The Greasers’. Dallas Winston, Ponnyboy Curtis and Johnny Cade from ‘The Greasers’ befriend the rich Cherry Valance and Marcia in a drive-in. Late one night, a group of ‘The Socials’ chase and severely beat up Johnny and drown Ponnyboy in a fountain. However Johnny stabs one Socs and kills him, saving Ponnyboy. The desperate boys seek Dallas and he finds a hideout for them in a nearby town. One week later, Johnny and Ponnyboy decide to return to their hometown, with Dallas, to claim the murder as self-defense. But on their way back, they see the church on fire and Ponyboy and Johnny help the children trapped in the church and become heroes. However Johnny is badly wounded and interned in the hospital. Meanwhile The Socs and The Greasers schedule a fight.

The Motorcycle Diaries is an adaptation of a journal written by Ernesto “Che” Guevara de la Serna when he was 23 years old. He and his friend, Alberto Granado are typical college students who, seeking fun and adventure before graduation, decide to travel across Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela in order to do their medical residency at a leper colony. Beginning as a buddy/road movie in which Ernesto and Alberto are looking for chicks, fun and adventure before they must grow up and have a more serious life. As is said in the film itself, it’s about “two lives running parallel for a while.” The two best friends start off with the same goals and aspirations, but by the time the film is over, it’s clear what each man’s destiny has become.

An unnamed British cocaine dealer treats his work as a business, and neither believes he is or acts like a gangster. He respects those he works with and in return they respect him. In treating his work as a business, he has amassed a small fortune of laundered money and despite his relatively young age, he plans on retiring soon. His supplier, Jimmy Price, asks him for a small favor outside his normal work: find Charlie, the drug addicted daughter of a well known colleague named Eddie Temple, she who has escaped from a rehab center. Despite not being his business, he can’t refuse Jimmy’s request. More along the lines of normal business, Jimmy also hooks him up with a small time hood named Duke who has come into a stash of one million ecstasy pills. Jimmy wants in on the business, although the cocaine dealer doesn’t like Duke or dealing with him. Problems arise for the cocaine dealer when he finds out the ecstasy pills were stolen from a ruthless Serbian gang, the cocaine dealer who is implicated as the mastermind. He also runs into problems in his search for Charlie. Regardless of his stance on gangsterism, he may have to act like one to get himself out of these dilemma.

As she lay dying in a hospital bed on the eve of Hurricane Katrina hitting New Orleans, an elderly woman asks her daughter Caroline to read from a diary left to her by a man named Benjamin. Born on the same day World War I ended, Benjamin Button’s mother died giving birth to him. As a newborn, he was old and wrinkled and his horrified father Thomas Button leaves him on the doorstep of an old folk’s home. Benjamin fits in well for, despite his young age, he looked as old as most of the residents. Benjamin soon realizes that he is growing younger, not older however. Early on, he meets the love of his life, Daisy, a beautiful red-haired, green-eyed child who grows into a beautiful woman while Benjamin grows into a handsome young man. Their lives take many different turns and making a life together is long in coming. It also is of limited duration given their ultimately different fates.
